Retraining how you move.

I find the movement habits giving you trouble and we drill better ones until they take over. I work from the National Academy of Sports Medicine corrective exercise model.

The first meeting is free and runs an hour. It is an assessment: gait, standing posture, a step, a sit-to-stand, and whatever movement brought you in. If it turns up unexplained pain, a joint that gives way, or anything else outside a trainer's scope, I send you to a physician before we start.

The method

How the method works

Your body gets good at whatever it repeats. Years of sitting, of guarding a sore joint, of favoring one leg, all of that trains a movement habit as effectively as any exercise would. So we train a better one and repeat it until that one takes over.

We work movement in every direction ordinary life uses: forward, sideways, rotating, loaded and unloaded. I pay attention to how you are breathing the whole time, because breathing mechanics and posture are tied together and the literature suggests dysfunction in one feeds the other. Weeks of repetition are what take the corrected movement from deliberate to automatic.

  1. Assess

    What I look at

I watch how you stand, walk, reach and bend. The joint that hurts is usually not the joint causing the problem, so I assess the whole chain, foot to shoulder.

  2. Rebalance

    What changes first

Some muscles take on work that belongs to others. We release and lengthen the overworked ones, wake up the ones that have gone quiet, and get the load spread across the joint the way it is supposed to be.

  3. Integrate

    Where it gets applied

Then we drill the corrected movement inside things you actually do: carrying, climbing, reaching, turning. That is the step that gets the change out of the session and into your week.

For active adults 55+

Mindful aging training

This track covers what clients in this group ask for most: yard work, travel, stairs, and picking up a grandchild. We build the strength, balance and range those take.

What we practice

  • Getting up from the floor and from low chairs
  • Stairs in both directions without gripping the rail
  • Balance and steadiness on uneven ground
  • Carrying groceries, luggage, and grandchildren
  • Holding an upright position through a full day

How sessions run

  • Each session is set to what you can do that day
  • One-on-one, at conversational pace
  • I explain the reason for every exercise
  • A short set of homework movements between sessions

The free posture guide covers five of the movements we start with.

Healing & getting ready

The next step after therapy

Physical therapy is time-limited, and what it gave you fades without something to continue it. People come to me after discharge, with their doctor's clearance, to keep building. Others come in before a scheduled surgery because their surgeon wants them stronger going in. Either way I work with your doctor and inside the limits they set, and I am glad to interface with anyone else on your care team.

Common starting points

  • Physical therapy has ended and there is no plan for what follows it
  • A surgery is coming, and your doctor wants you stronger first
  • Aches that return in the same place every year
  • Desk life: rounded shoulders, tight hips, tired back

How your doctor fits in

  • Your doctor contacts me. We agree on goals and limits.
  • I program inside their guidance and send progress notes whenever you or they ask
  • Your rate drops from $129 to $98 an hour

I can give you a one-page summary to hand your doctor at your next visit.

Timeline

What the timeline looks like

You have moved this way for years, maybe decades, and your body is efficient at it. Replacing it takes months of concentrated work. Anybody promising you faster is not being straight with you.

If there is not much history to undo, two to three months. If you have moved this way for decades, plan on six months to a year.
